About this painting
This work aims to depict the battle between conflicting emotions at the end of a relationship.

By 2015, the different art forms I had explored were beginning to take shape independently. He had begun writing more seriously only a few years earlier, and music and performance were becoming more important as creative expressions.

One result of this inspired atmosphere was to apply 18th c. Enlightenment-era philosophy to painting in a way that was previously applied to music. There have been triptych works, and series of paintings, but often these are thematically and visually unified only haphazardly, or coincidentally (there are exceptions, such as in Francis Bacon's work).

I wanted to apply an idealised structure to painting like the symphonic forms; unified visual themes that recur, repetition and structure. This was designed as the first movement of one such work.
