About this painting
The original idea for this came while walking and thinking about the theme of "Liberation" for the Sue Ryder art competition, which, it appeared, ran for just two years but had the same theme each time.
I saw a woman removing a man's skin and considered settings. I'm still unsure as to the meaning of this image; whether it reveals a female component of a man, or represents the shedding a male component of a woman, or the emergence of a woman from childhood. In either case, this is a positive painting about release and certainly about the birth of a woman, hence the title. A woman stands on a beach, stepping out of male skin. A free bird flies in the sky, it's shape echoed in a tattoo. |
