About this painting

Painted as my personal 2010 Christmas card.

The arc of a star above casts a yellow glow over a brightly coloured desert scene. A nativity holds the central space, while the outer edges are occupied by exotic aliens.

Technical details

Violet can be a difficult colour to use because most violet pigments are delicate and transparent, not suitable for underpainting where opacity and permanence are vital. Here the sky was painted in browns before being glazed in manganese purple. The bright purple imprimatura, visible here in the unpainted parts, is dioxazine.
