About this painting
A commissioned work to paint St. John's Church, Doddington with a few extra requested elements; a cat, a bat, a flower. I wanted to make a work that unifies around a visual theme, like a theme in music, my idea of a 'symphonic' painting. This is useful because it can bring a composition together that might be overly complex otherwise. In this case, I chose a curve as a theme, as in the Gothic arches of the church, and worked on this to add elements which curl and complement the overall ideas.

I wanted to include contrast too, so night and day, but also a warming feeling of dawn, new starts and flight, and so swallows, whose wings curve like the arches of the church.
