About this painting
A painting about memory and recall, the shadow apparitions of a someone we use to know. Motivated by a desire to portray a universal feeling. There are many references and ideas about memory in the painting; the shape of the figure is repeated on the horizon as a 'hole' in the sky, and the overall image is framed also in the same shape. This partly echoes my ideas of 'symphonic painting' where a visual motif (here, the shape of the figure) is repeated in the painting in different forms like the theme in a piece of music. Thus, the figure is visually echoed; hence memory, time.

The elements like the broken object (arm? rod?) and hanging pear seek to create a mood. What do we feel when we sense a pear is hanging from a string? A heaviness, a sadness, though the pear is ripe. These objects were conceived unconsciously, to evoke a mood, their interpretation is yours. Perhaps though, a reflective or spiritual mood is part of this due to Juan Sánchez Cotán, a 16th century artist of still life's famous for painting fruit, vegetables and other items hanging from strings. His work is certainly a mood influence on myself, and upon this work.
