Song For Emma

There she is welcoming her boy friend.
I wipe the window on the bus.

First time in a while.
I managed a smile.

Her name was Emma we were best friends.
When we were children years ago.

Something like six.
Running with sticks.
Out in the back.
Acting like kids.

I saw her once in Allied Carpets.
She had a shock of orange hair.
I never said hello, embarassed
to seem lonely.
I only thought of her last Tuesday
when queueing for my birthday cake.
Remembering the distant party
she had thrown for me.

I wonder if she'd recognise me,
the boy she sat with on the wall.
Back in the house where I was little.
Would she remember me at all.

Emma and I.
Trying to fly.
There on the road
drifting on by.

I saw her once in Allied Carpets.
She had a shock of orange hair.
I never said hello, embarassed
to seem lonely.
I only thought of her last Tuesday
when queueing for my birthday cake.
Remembering the distant party
she had thrown for me.

One day her family moved quite quickly.
I didn't know her new address.

Lost years and a day.
Far and away.
Back of my mind.
But then there was the time...

I saw her face in Allied Carpets.
She had a shock of orange hair.
I never said hello, embarassed
to seem lonely.
I only thought of her last Tuesday
when queueing for my birthday cake.
Remembering the distant party
she had thrown for me.
