About this event
ArtSwarm Live events are live, open-mic performances of poetry, music, or anything else on a certain theme. Acts are typically 10 minutes long and are open to any local performers. The theme of this first event of 2023 was Boxes.

This was the first event which was filmed. Mark Sheeky opened the evening with the song Boxes, the Nicholas Ferenczy performed three works; Jack Curses Toys, a tune called Levelling Up #1, and a rendition of Bowie's Space Oddity. Deborah Edgeley read The Box Waiters, and performed Boxy Lady on Kalimba with Mark Sheeky, a reference to the box-shape of the instrument and the way that so much music comes from boxes. Helen Kay read three poems, one with her alter-ego Nigella.

A video and song by Andrew Williams, In Boxes, was shown next, and in the second half Mark hosted mock-quiz show 'Box Clever' which involved some audience participation as contestants were asked to answer a number-based question, then decide if the answer was higher or lower than the guess. Maggie Shaw read an excerpt from her novel, and led a sing-along to the well known Little Boxes. The evening was closed with a reading of two poems by Carol J Forrester.
